About Color Words
What this skill is
Color word literacy connects visual color perception to print literacy, teaching high-frequency sight words (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, black, white, brown) that frequently appear in early decodable readers.
When children learn it
Taught systematically throughout kindergarten as part of sight word literacy and early emergent reading (CCSS RF.K.3.C).
Teaching Tips
- Write color words on plain index cards in black ink: have your child read the word and then place a matching colored crayon directly on top of the card. Keeping the ink black ensures they read the letters rather than guessing from ink color.
Common Mistakes
- Relying on colored font cues instead of actually reading the black letters of the printed word.
- Confusing words with similar initial consonants like "blue", "black", and "brown".
- Struggling to spell longer color words like "yellow" and "orange".
