About Name Writing
What this skill is
Name writing is the personal milestone of forming the letters of one's own name in correct sequence on ruled lines. Children learn that their name starts with an uppercase capital letter followed by lowercase letters. Writing one's name builds personal identity, pencil control, letter proportions, letter spacing, and spatial placement across a continuous baseline during daily classroom activities and school assignments.
When children learn it
Name writing begins in preschool as children trace their first initial and full first name. By kindergarten entry, students are expected to write their first name independently on classroom work. Practice continues through 1st grade until name writing is fluent, well-spaced, and correctly capitalized across notebook lines.
Common Mistakes
- Writing the entire name in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS instead of using a capital start letter followed by lowercase letters.
- Reversing letter order inside the name, such as writing 'Amn' instead of 'Ann' on practice lines.
- Mixing letter sizes randomly across the name, causing middle letters to tower over the initial capital letter.
