About All About Me
What this skill is
An All About Me page is a gentle mix of skills: writing a name, counting candles for an age, choosing and naming a color, and drawing people and things that matter to the child. There are no wrong answers, so it builds confidence along with pencil control.
When children learn it
Writing their own name is one of the first things kindergartners learn to print, and talking about themselves and their family is part of early speaking and listening. The page fits any time in pre-K or kindergarten.
Teaching Tips
- Write your child's name lightly in pencil first so they can trace it, then let them try on their own.
- Ask them to tell you about each drawing and write one word they say under it.
Common Mistakes
- Writing the name in all capital letters. Show your child how to start with a capital and finish with lowercase letters.
- Drawing a family so small it fills one corner of the box. Encourage big drawings that use the whole space.
