About Same and Different
What this skill is
Visual discrimination requires examining rows of similar pictures to determine which items share identical visual attributes and which single item exhibits a distinct difference in size, facing direction, or pattern.
When children learn it
Introduced in preschool and kindergarten as an early reading readiness milestone (CCSS K.MD.B.3).
Teaching Tips
- Always read the prompt aloud together and point: have your child tap each picture with their finger and say: "Apple, apple, apple, orange. The orange is different!" Tapping every item prevents skipping pictures.
Common Mistakes
- Overlooking subtle differences such as an animal facing left while three others face right.
- Circling the items that are the same when the worksheet instruction asks to circle the one that is different.
- Rushing through rows without scanning every item from left to right.
