About Adverb Phrases
What this skill is
An adverb phrase is a group of words that functions as an adverb to modify a verb, adjective, or adverb. Most adverb phrases are prepositional phrases that answer questions such as "in what way?", "at what time?", or "to what place?".
When children learn it
Adverb phrases and their punctuation (such as introductory adverbial clauses and prepositional phrases) are taught and analyzed in 5th grade language arts.
Teaching Tips
- Look at the verb first: in "The birds flew across the lake", ask "Where did they fly?". When your child answers "across the lake", point out that the entire three-word phrase acts as an adverb answering where the verb happened.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing adverb phrases (modifying a verb) with adjective phrases (modifying a noun) when prepositional phrases look identical.
- Forgetting to place a comma after an introductory adverb phrase that begins a sentence.
- Failing to identify the full multi-word phrase, circling only the single preposition.
