About Proper Adjectives
What this skill is
A proper adjective is an adjective formed from a proper noun, such as Italian from Italy, Mexican from Mexico, or Shakespearean from Shakespeare. Because they originate from specific proper nouns, proper adjectives always require a capital letter.
When children learn it
Proper adjectives are introduced in 3rd grade and practiced extensively in 4th and 5th grade social studies and language conventions lessons.
Teaching Tips
- Look at a world map or food packaging in your kitchen pantry: connect the country name to the cuisine or language (Japan -> Japanese food, Mexico -> Mexican art). Remind your child that just like the country is capitalized, the describing word gets a capital letter too.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving proper adjectives lowercase because they appear before a common noun (such as "french fries" or "spanish rice").
- Confusing the country proper noun (China) with the proper adjective form (Chinese) when completing sentences.
- Misspelling irregular proper adjective suffixes (such as writing "Spainish" instead of "Spanish").
