About Interjections
What this skill is
An interjection is a word or short phrase used to express sudden emotion, surprise, or feeling. Strong interjections are followed by an exclamation mark, while mild interjections are set off with a comma.
When children learn it
Interjections are introduced in 4th and 5th grade (CCSS L.5.1.a) as students study dialogue writing, expressive punctuation, and the full spectrum of parts of speech.
Teaching Tips
- Read comic strips or graphic novels together and spot the speech bubble sound words and interjections (like "Zap!", "Ouch!", "Hey!"). Explain that strong feelings get an exclamation point, but calm comments ("Oh, I see") only need a comma.
Common Mistakes
- Using an exclamation point for mild conversational interjections where a simple comma is appropriate (such as "Well, I think so").
- Confusing interjections with regular exclamatory sentences that have full subjects and predicates.
- Overusing interjections in formal academic writing where objective language is required.
