About Selecting Pronouns

What this skill is

A pronoun is a short word that stands in for a noun so we do not have to say the same name again. Instead of "Mia lost Mia's glove," we say "Mia lost her glove." The sheets here begin by matching nouns to pronouns, then move to picking the right pronoun and writing it in.

When children learn it

Children use pronouns when they talk long before they can name them. In 1st grade, aligned to Common Core L.1.1.d, they learn to use personal pronouns such as I, me, he, she, it, we and they in their writing. Matching comes first, then choosing, then replacing a noun on their own.

Teaching Tips

  • Say a sentence with a name in it and ask your child to say it again with a pronoun. "Dad is cooking" becomes "He is cooking." Three or four at dinner is plenty.
  • When a sheet asks for a pronoun, have your child point to the noun it replaces first. If they cannot point to one noun, the pronoun is probably wrong.

Common Mistakes

  • Using she or he for a group, so "the girls" becomes "she" instead of "they".
  • Picking a pronoun that fits the sentence but not the noun, as in "The ball rolled and he stopped."
  • Keeping the noun and adding the pronoun too, as in "Mom she went to work."
  • Treating a pet with a name as "it" on one line and "he" on the next. The sheets use clear nouns so only one pronoun fits.
