About Subject and Object Pronouns
What this skill is
Pronouns are words that replace nouns to prevent repetitive language. Subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) function as sentence subjects performing actions. Object pronouns (me, you, him, her, it, us, them) function as direct objects receiving actions or objects of prepositions. Solvers study pronoun case, subject/object pronoun discrimination, noun replacement, syntactic role, and pronoun case rules across writing and editing.
When children learn it
Basic subject pronouns (I, he, she, it, they) are introduced in 1st grade and 2nd grade. In 3rd grade and 4th grade, students master object pronouns (me, him, her, us, them), compound pronoun structures (Sam and I vs Sam and me), and pronoun case editing across writing workshops and grammar drills.
Common Mistakes
- Using an object pronoun as a compound subject (writing 'Me and Sam went' instead of 'Sam and I went').
- Using a subject pronoun as an object of a preposition (writing 'between you and I' instead of 'between you and me').
- Replacing a plural noun with a singular pronoun (writing 'the dogs ran until it got tired' instead of 'they got tired').
