About Building Sentences

What this skill is

Building sentences is the foundational process of arranging individual words in proper English word order (subject-verb-object) with correct capitalization and end punctuation to express a clear, readable thought.

When children learn it

Word unscrambling and sentence building begin in kindergarten and 1st grade, helping early readers connect individual sight words into coherent written expressions.

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Detective Strategy": tell your child to find the word with the capital letter first (it goes at the start!) and the word with the period attached next (it goes at the end!). Arranging the remaining middle words becomes easy once the sentence bookends are in place.

Common Mistakes

  • Arranging words out of order because of random placement without reading the resulting sentence aloud.
  • Leaving out small sight words like "the", "a", or "is" when transferring scrambled word cards to paper.
  • Forgetting to place the capital word at the front and the punctuation mark at the very end.
