About Double Negatives
What this skill is
A double negative occurs when two negative words (such as not, no, never, nobody, nothing, scarcely, or hardly) are used in the same clause, which grammatically cancels the negative and creates confusion in formal English.
When children learn it
Recognizing and correcting double negatives is introduced in 4th grade and refined in 5th grade as students polish speech and formal written composition.
Teaching Tips
- Explain that negative words in English are like math minus signs: two minuses cancel each other out and turn into a plus. If you say "I don't know nothing", it literally means you know something! Show your child how swapping the second negative for "anything" fixes the sentence.
Common Mistakes
- Using "no" or "none" after negative contractions, saying "I didn't see nobody" instead of "I didn't see anybody".
- Overlooking hidden negatives like "barely", "hardly", or "scarcely" when paired with "not".
- Overcorrecting by removing both negatives, accidentally inverting the intended meaning of the sentence.
