About Sentence Types
What this skill is
Sentences are classified into four main types according to their purpose: declarative (statements sharing facts), interrogative (questions seeking information), imperative (commands giving instructions), and exclamatory (expressing strong feelings).
When children learn it
Distinguishing statements and questions begins in 1st grade. Identifying all four sentence types (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory) and matching them to punctuation is mastered in 2nd and 3rd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Play the "Voice Match" game: give your child four sentence cards and have them read each with the matching attitude: a robot voice for statements, an inquiring voice for questions, a bossy voice for commands, and an excited cheer for exclamations.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing commands (imperatives) with statements because they both usually end with periods, missing the implied "you" subject.
- Labeling any sentence containing exciting words as an exclamation even if it ends with a calm period.
- Punctuation mismatch, placing question marks at the end of polite requests or statements.
