About Simple and Complete Subjects

What this skill is

The complete subject includes the core noun along with all of its modifying words, articles, and phrases. The simple subject is the single core noun or pronoun that controls verb agreement, stripped of all descriptive baggage.

When children learn it

Distinguishing simple and complete subjects and predicates is taught in 3rd grade and practiced in 4th and 5th grade to improve agreement precision and diagramming skills.

Teaching Tips

  • Ask your child to find the "bare bones" noun: if you strip away all the adjectives, colors, and extra words, which single word is actually doing the action? Have them circle the simple subject inside the bracketed complete subject on their sheet.

Common Mistakes

  • Including articles and adjectives in the simple subject, writing "the red fox" instead of isolating "fox".
  • Getting confused by compound subjects where two or more nouns share the same verb.
  • Selecting a noun inside a modifying prepositional phrase as the simple subject instead of the true head noun.
