About Future Tense
What this skill is
Future tense verbs express actions that have not occurred yet but are expected to happen later. In English, future tense is commonly formed using the helping verb "will" or the phrase "going to" followed by the base form of the main verb.
When children learn it
Children understand future time concepts orally in early grades. Formal identification of future tense and writing sentences using "will" and "going to" is introduced in 2nd grade and reinforced in 3rd and 4th grade narrative writing.
Teaching Tips
- Use a simple three-step timeline on scrap paper labeled "Yesterday", "Today", and "Tomorrow". Ask your child which column the sentence belongs in. For future sentences, prompt them with "Tomorrow, I will..." to ensure the base verb remains unchanged after "will".
Common Mistakes
- Adding unnecessary endings to the main verb after "will", such as writing "will walked" or "will goes" instead of "will walk" or "will go".
- Omitting the linking verb before "going to", writing "I going to swim" instead of "I am going to swim".
- Inconsistent tense shifts within the same story, jumping from past tense into future tense unexpectedly.
