About Irregular Verbs

What this skill is

Irregular verbs do not form their past tense by adding -ed. Instead, their vowel sounds change or the entire word transforms, such as go becoming went, see becoming saw, and fly becoming flew.

When children learn it

Common irregular past tense verbs are introduced in 2nd grade (CCSS L.2.1.d). Students expand their repertoire of irregular past tense and past participle forms throughout 3rd and 4th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Group irregular verbs by sound patterns rather than random lists: words that change to -ew (blow/blew, grow/grew), and words that change vowel from -i- to -a- (sing/sang, ring/rang). Grouping by pattern helps children recall irregular past forms much faster during worksheet practice.

Common Mistakes

  • Overregularizing irregular verbs by attaching an -ed suffix, creating errors like "comed", "felled", or "bringed".
  • Confusing past tense with past participle forms, such as saying "I seen it" instead of "I saw it" or "I have seen it".
  • Using the present tense form when describing past events because the irregular shift was not recalled.
