What this skill is
Subject-verb agreement is the foundational grammatical rule requiring that a verb matches its subject in number: singular subjects take singular verbs (usually ending in -s in present tense: "the cat RUNS"), while plural subjects take plural verbs without -s ("the cats RUN"). Solvers study singular/plural agreement, compound subject agreement, agreement across intervening prepositional phrases, agreement logic, and agreement rules across writing and editing.
When children learn it
Basic singular/plural present tense agreement (he runs vs they run) begins in 1st grade and 2nd grade. In 3rd through 5th grade, lessons expand to compound subjects joined by and/or, agreement across intervening phrases (the box of chocolates IS heavy), collective nouns, and indefinite pronoun agreement across writing workshops and essay revision.
Common Mistakes
- Adding an '-s' to a verb paired with a plural subject (writing 'the dogs runs' instead of 'the dogs run').
- Agreeing the verb with a noun inside an intervening prepositional phrase instead of the true subject noun (writing 'the box of chocolates ARE heavy').
- Mismatched agreement with compound subjects joined by 'or' or 'nor' (failing to agree with the closer subject).
