About Verb Tense Consistency
What this skill is
Verb tense consistency means keeping the same grammatical tense throughout a sentence, paragraph, or essay unless there is a clear chronological reason to shift. Maintaining consistent tense keeps the sequence of events clear for the reader.
When children learn it
Verb tense consistency is a prominent 5th grade language standard (CCSS L.5.1.d) that forms a cornerstone of student revision, essay writing, and narrative editing.
Teaching Tips
- Have your child highlight all the verbs in their draft or worksheet paragraph with a colored pencil. Have them read only the highlighted words in sequence ("walked... looked... saw... smiles"). When they reach the present tense word, the mismatch stands out instantly for easy correction.
Common Mistakes
- Shifting from past tense into present tense in the middle of a narrative paragraph (such as "She opened the door and sees a box").
- Failing to notice tense shifts because the action in the story feels exciting and immediate to the student writer.
- Over-editing sentences with legitimate time changes where an introductory past event causes a current present state.
