About Analogies

What this skill is

Analogical reasoning identifies the relationship between an initial pair (A is to B) and maps that exact structural relationship onto a new pair (as C is to D), spanning opposites, part-to-whole, tools, and categories.

When children learn it

Visual analogies are introduced in 1st grade; verbal analogies (synonyms, antonyms, worker/tool, item/purpose) are taught in 3rd through 5th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Build a bridge sentence: turn the first pair into a clear sentence, such as "A puppy is a young dog." Then plug in the second word: "A kitten is a young ______." If the sentence makes sense, the analogy is solid!

Common Mistakes

  • Associating words by topic rather than matching the exact relational connection (e.g., bird is to nest as dog is to bone instead of dog is to kennel).
  • Reversing the relationship direction across pairs.
  • Not reading all multiple-choice options before deciding.
