About Solving for the Unknown
What this skill is
Solving for the unknown introduces algebraic variables (like x, n, or a box), teaching that an equation is a balanced scale where inverse operations isolate the unknown variable.
When children learn it
Informal equations with symbols begin in 1st and 2nd grade. Using variables in one-step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations is taught in 3rd through 5th grade (CCSS 3.OA.D.8, 4.OA.A.3).
Teaching Tips
- Think of a balance scale: whatever you do to one side of the equals sign, you must do to the other side to keep it balanced. To undo "+ 7", subtract 7 from both sides!
Common Mistakes
- Applying the same operation instead of the inverse operation (adding 5 to solve x + 5 = 12).
- Doing an operation to only one side of the equals sign without balancing both sides.
- Getting intimidated by letter variables like x or n.
