About Counting to 10

What this skill is

Counting to 10 establishes the one-to-one principle, the understanding that each object counted corresponds to exactly one number word, and the cardinality principle, that the final number spoken represents the total.

When children learn it

Rote counting and counting object sets up to 10 is taught in preschool and kindergarten (CCSS K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Touch and Move" method: when counting real items, have your child slide each object across a line as they say the number. On worksheets, have them make a small pencil mark on each picture as they count.

Common Mistakes

  • Saying numbers faster than the finger moves, double-counting or skipping objects during one-to-one counting.
  • Counting the same object twice in scattered or unorganized groups.
  • Not knowing how many items were counted when asked "How many in all?" after reciting 1 to 7.
