About Divisibility
What this skill is
Divisibility rules are algorithmic shortcuts that determine whether a whole number divides evenly by another number without performing full long division.
When children learn it
Taught in 4th grade under factors and multiples standards (CCSS 4.OA.B.4) to streamline fraction simplification.
Teaching Tips
- Practice the "Sum of Digits" test for 3: take 162, add 1 + 6 + 2 = 9. Since 9 is in the 3s times table, 162 is divisible by 3! Children love this magic math shortcut.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the rule for 3 (sum of digits) with the rule for 2 or 5 (last digit only).
- Assuming an odd number cannot be divisible by 3.
- Forgetting that numbers divisible by 6 must pass both the 2 test and the 3 test.
