About Factors of a Number
What this skill is
Factors are whole numbers that multiply together to produce another number. Finding all factor pairs of a number within 100 provides the basis for fraction simplification and prime analysis.
When children learn it
Finding all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100 is a designated 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.OA.B.4).
Teaching Tips
- Draw a "Factor Rainbow": start at 1 and test numbers sequentially: 1 x 24, 2 x 12, 3 x 8, 4 x 6. Does 5 work? No. Then you meet 6, which is already listed! You know you have found all factors without missing any.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping middle factors, such as listing 1 and 24, 2 and 12, but missing 3 and 8 or 4 and 6.
- Confusing factors (numbers that divide into a target) with multiples (numbers that skip count from a target).
- Stopping after finding only the first factor pair.
