About Multiples
What this skill is
A multiple is the product of a given number and any other whole number (such as multiples of 6 being 6, 12, 18, 24, 30...), extending infinitely forward.
When children learn it
Recognizing that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.OA.B.4).
Teaching Tips
- Remember: "Factors are few, Multiples multiply forever!". Multiples get bigger like giant multiply monsters (6, 12, 18...), while factors fit inside the number.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing factors with multiples, giving smaller numbers when asked for multiples.
- Skipping terms when listing consecutive multiples.
- Not recognizing that every number is a multiple of itself (6 x 1 = 6).
