About Prime Factorization
What this skill is
Prime factorization expresses a composite number as the unique product of its prime factors (such as 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3, or 2^3 x 3), revealing the fundamental multiplicative building components of the number.
When children learn it
Taught in 4th and 5th grade as a core pre-algebra and advanced factoring skill.
Teaching Tips
- Teach your child to circle prime numbers as soon as they appear at the end of a factor tree branch. If a number is prime (like 2, 3, or 5), put a circle around it like an apple on a tree. Keep splitting uncircled numbers until only apples remain!
Common Mistakes
- Stopping a factor tree branch at a composite number (like stopping at 4 instead of splitting it into 2 x 2).
- Adding factors instead of multiplying them to check the final product.
- Including 1 in the prime factorization list.
