About Before, After and Between

What this skill is

Understanding before, after, and between develops relative number magnitude and ordinal position, helping children understand what number comes immediately one less or one more than a given value.

When children learn it

Identifying numbers immediately before and after is introduced in kindergarten counting standards and consolidated in 1st grade through mental number line drills.

Teaching Tips

  • Walk along a numbered sidewalk or hallway: stand on number 6, ask your child to step backward to see what comes before (5), and forward to see what comes after (7). Connecting physical movement to the words makes worksheet tracks intuitive.

Common Mistakes

  • Finding "before" numbers by counting all the way up from one each time rather than counting back one step.
  • Confusing the spatial direction of "before" (to the left) and "after" (to the right) on horizontal tracks.
  • Struggling when crossing decade boundaries, such as naming the number before 20 or after 29.
