About Even and Odd Numbers

What this skill is

An even number can be divided into two equal groups of whole numbers with zero remainder (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8). An odd number has one leftover unit when paired (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9).

When children learn it

Pairing objects to determine even or odd quantities is introduced in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.OA.C.3) and extended to multi-digit rules in 3rd grade multiplication prep.

Teaching Tips

  • Use pairs of socks or small coins: give your child a handful and have them pair them up two by two. If every item has a partner, it is EVEN; if one is left alone, it is ODD. For big numbers, teach them to circle only the last digit.

Common Mistakes

  • Looking at the first digit of a multi-digit number (like the 3 in 34) rather than the ones place to determine even or odd status.
  • Thinking zero is neither or odd, rather than recognizing numbers ending in zero are even.
  • Forgetting that every pair must be complete, labeling an odd group even by accident.
