About Writing Money Amounts

What this skill is

Writing money amounts teaches proper currency formatting, using either the cent symbol (45¢) or the dollar sign and decimal point ($0.45), but never combining both.

When children learn it

Using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately is mastered in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.MD.C.8).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the rule: "Pick ONE sign, and dollar goes in front!". If you use the dollar sign, it goes at the beginning like a guard ($4.50). If you use the cent sign, it goes at the end (50¢).

Common Mistakes

  • Using both symbols simultaneously (writing $0.75¢).
  • Omitting the leading zero for amounts under ten cents (writing $0.5 instead of $0.05).
  • Placing the dollar sign after the number instead of in front (writing 5$).
