About Multi-Digit Multiplication
What this skill is
Multi-digit multiplication multiplies two-digit by two-digit and multi-digit by one-digit numbers, combining partial products systematically into a total product.
When children learn it
Multiplying up to four digits by one digit and two two-digit numbers is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NBT.B.5). Fluently multiplying multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm is a 5th grade benchmark (CCSS 5.NBT.B.5).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Placeholder Hug": when your child finishes multiplying the ones digit and moves to the tens digit, have them draw a heart or happy face around the zero placeholder on row two before continuing. It guarantees the zero is never forgotten.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting the placeholder zero in the ones column when multiplying by the tens digit in the standard algorithm.
- Adding carried digits before multiplying instead of multiplying first.
- Misaligning partial product rows during final addition.
