About Properties of Operations
What this skill is
Properties of operations are universal arithmetic axioms (commutative, associative, identity, zero properties) that allow mathematicians to manipulate and reorder terms to make computation simpler.
When children learn it
Applied to multiplication and addition across 3rd and 4th grade (CCSS 3.OA.B.5).
Teaching Tips
- Look at the numbers: if the numbers traded places (4 + 7 = 7 + 4), it is Commutative. If the numbers stayed in the same order but the parentheses moved ((2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)), it is Associative.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to apply commutative properties to subtraction or division (thinking 8 - 3 = 3 - 8).
- Confusing the associative property (re-grouping with parentheses) with the commutative property (re-ordering).
- Struggling to identify properties in formal multiple-choice questions.
