About Find the Pattern Rule
What this skill is
Finding the rule requires identifying the consistent mathematical operation that transforms an input number into an output number across an entire function table or sequence.
When children learn it
Generating and analyzing number patterns and identifying input-output rules is an explicit 4th and 5th grade standard (CCSS 4.OA.C.5).
Teaching Tips
- Call the table a "Number Machine": a number goes in, something happens inside, and a new number pops out. Test your child's guess on every row: "Does 3 x 2 = 6? Yes. Does 4 x 2 = 8? Yes!". Testing all rows guarantees accuracy.
Common Mistakes
- Finding a rule that works for the first row (like +6) and not testing it on row two where the actual rule is multiplication (x3).
- Confusing the input and output columns, reversing the operation direction.
- Struggling when operations involve two steps (such as multiply by 2 then add 1).
