About Mental Subtraction
What this skill is
Mental subtraction utilizes flexible strategies like counting up from the subtrahend to the minuend, compensation (subtracting 10 then adding 1 to subtract 9), and partial differences.
When children learn it
Mentally subtracting 10 or 100 is taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.NBT.B.8). Fluent mental subtraction within 100 is refined in 3rd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Count Up the Gap" method: for 62 - 48, start at 48, hop 2 to reach 50, then hop 12 to reach 62. Add the hops: 2 + 12 = 14. Counting up the difference is far easier to calculate mentally than subtracting down.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to visualize vertical borrowing algorithms mentally instead of counting up.
- Adding the compensation adjustment instead of subtracting it, or vice versa.
- Losing track of the starting total during multi-step mental calculations.
