About Subtracting from Whole Tens, Hundreds and Thousands

What this skill is

Subtracting across zeros occurs when the top number ends in zeros (like 500 - 237), requiring students to regroup chained place values from the hundreds or thousands down to the ones.

When children learn it

Regrouping across zeros within 100 begins in 2nd grade. Regrouping across hundreds and thousands is mastered in 3rd and 4th grade (CCSS 3.NBT.A.2, 4.NBT.B.4).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach the "Box Method": in 500 - 237, draw a box around the 50. Borrow 1 from 50 to make it 49, and turn the last zero into 10. Now subtract: 10 - 7 = 3, 9 - 3 = 6, 4 - 2 = 2 (263). The box method eliminates messy multiple scratch-outs.

Common Mistakes

  • Turning middle zeros into 10 instead of 9 during chained borrowing.
  • Borrowing directly from the hundreds without updating the tens place.
  • Subtracting digits in reverse when top digits are zero (writing 500 - 134 = 434).
