About Subtraction with Number Lines
What this skill is
Number line subtraction models subtraction as moving backward toward zero, reinforcing that taking away decreases position along a scale.
When children learn it
Using number lines to subtract within 10 and 20 begins in 1st grade and connects to measurement scales in 2nd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Remind your child that minus means "back up": when they see 9 - 4, put their pencil on 9 and chant "hop back 1, hop back 2, hop back 3, hop back 4... we landed on 5!". Physical hop chanting prevents direction errors.
Common Mistakes
- Hopping to the right (adding) instead of hopping to the left (subtracting).
- Counting the starting number as hop one.
- Losing count of hops when jumping across multiple numbers.
