About Subtraction Word Problems
What this skill is
Subtraction word problems involve diverse situations beyond simple taking away: separating groups, finding differences (how many more/fewer), and determining missing parts.
When children learn it
Solving comparison and take-away word problems within 20 begins in 1st grade (CCSS 1.OA.A.1). Solving two-step subtraction problems within 100 is taught in 2nd and 3rd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Ask: "Did the amount get bigger or smaller?". If someone ate snacks, lost marbles, or we are comparing who has more, the amount gets smaller or requires finding the gap, meaning subtraction. Act it out with coins on the table.
Common Mistakes
- Adding numbers because they saw words like "more" in a comparison question ("How many more did Liam have?").
- Subtracting numbers in reverse order.
- Failing to identify the remaining quantity in multi-step scenarios.
