About Text Structure

What this skill is

Text structure refers to how an author organizes information in nonfiction writing. The five common structures are chronological order, description, cause and effect, problem and solution, and compare and contrast.

When children learn it

Nonfiction organizational patterns are introduced in 3rd grade and practiced extensively in 4th and 5th grade to improve analytical reading and essay comprehension.

Teaching Tips

  • Teach specific transition signal words: "problem, solution, resolved" signals problem-solution; "first, next, dates" signals chronology.
  • Have your child sketch a quick visual organizer (like a timeline or cause-and-effect flow chart) to match the text structure.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing chronological sequence with cause and effect.
  • Misidentifying a problem-and-solution passage as pure descriptive writing because details are vivid.
