About Reading Fluency
What this skill is
Reading fluency is the ability to read text accurately, at an appropriate pace, and with natural expression. When decoding becomes automatic, a child's mental energy is freed up to understand the story rather than struggling over individual words.
When children learn it
Formal fluency practice begins in late 1st grade and is heavily emphasized throughout 2nd and 3rd grade as students transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
Teaching Tips
- Practice "scooping" phrases with a pencil: draw gentle curves under two or three words that belong together (like "in the woods").
- Do repeated paired reading: read a short paragraph aloud once to model expression, then have your child read it back to you.
Common Mistakes
- Reading word-by-word like a robot without pausing at commas or periods.
- Rushing to read as fast as possible while skipping or misreading small words.
