About Sight Words

What this skill is

Sight words are high-frequency words that appear repeatedly in children's books (such as "the", "was", "said", and "where"). Many cannot be sounded out using simple phonics rules and must be recognized automatically on sight.

When children learn it

Children begin learning pre-primer sight words in kindergarten and continue mastering new lists of 50 to 100 words through 1st and 2nd grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Point out the "heart part": the part of the irregular word that follows regular phonics, and the one tricky part to memorize by heart.
  • Keep flash card reviews brisk. Aim for recognition within two seconds without laborious sounding out.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing visually similar sight words like "saw" and "was", or "of" and "for".
  • Trying to sound out irregular words letter by letter instead of recognizing the word whole.

Aim for a handful of new words a week, review the old ones daily, and use sight words worksheets to give your child repeated, low-pressure looks at each word.
