About Landforms and Water

What this skill is

Physical earth science categorizes surface features shaped by tectonic uplift, volcanic activity, and water erosion. Students differentiate freshwater bodies (streams, lakes, glaciers) from saltwater oceans and plains from elevated plateaus.

When children learn it

Standard 2nd and 3rd grade social studies and earth science topic (NGSS 2-ESS2-2).

Teaching Tips

  • Build sand or clay landforms in a baking pan: shape a mountain, valley, and flat plain. Pour water slowly from a cup down the mountain peak to watch how running water carves riverbeds into the valley floor.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing plateaus (flat elevated tables) with pointed mountain peaks.
  • Thinking all large bodies of water are saltwater oceans rather than freshwater lakes.
  • Mixing up canyons carved by moving rivers with valleys created by glaciers.
