About Rocks and Soil
What this skill is
Geology studies the minerals that form igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks through heating, pressure, and deposition. Soil science examines how weathered rock fragments mix with organic matter (humus), air, and moisture across distinct topsoil layers.

Teaching Tips
- Make a backyard soil shake jar: spoon backyard dirt into a clear jar with water, shake vigorously, and let it settle for two hours. Watch the distinct layers form: sand at the bottom, silt in the middle, clay on top, and organic bits floating.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking soil is just plain dirt without recognizing its biological organic layer (humus).
- Confusing weathering (breaking rock down) with erosion (moving rock fragments away).
- Assuming all rocks are equally hard without testing mineral scratch hardness.
