About The Solar System
What this skill is
Our solar system consists of our central star (the Sun), four inner rocky terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars), four outer gas and ice giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune), asteroid belts, and dwarf planets held by gravitational pull.
When children learn it
Introduced informally in kindergarten and 1st grade; formally mapped and calculated in 3rd through 5th grade (NGSS 5-ESS1-1).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the classic planetary sequence sentence: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos" (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). Point out the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter!
Common Mistakes
- Mixing up planetary sequence from the Sun (especially Venus, Mars, and Mercury).
- Believing the Sun moves across space around the Earth rather than Earth orbiting the Sun.
- Assuming all planets have solid surfaces a person could stand on.
