About Body Systems
What this skill is
Human physiology studies specialized organ networks: the skeletal framework, muscular movement, circulatory blood flow via the heart, respiratory lung exchange, digestive nutrient absorption, and nervous system signaling.
When children learn it
Taught systematically in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade life science and health curricula (NGSS 4-LS1-1).
Teaching Tips
- Measure heart rates together: locate your child's radial pulse at their wrist, count beats for 15 seconds, and multiply by four. Then do 30 jumping jacks and re-measure to discuss how muscles demand oxygen from the circulatory system.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking the stomach digests all food immediately rather than food continuing into the small intestine.
- Confusing arteries (carrying oxygen-rich blood away from heart) with veins (returning blood).
- Believing bones are dead calcium sticks rather than living, growing tissue that produces blood cells.
