About Health and Nutrition
What this skill is
Health and nutrition education teaches children how balanced food choices, physical activity, sleep, and personal hygiene maintain a healthy body. Students learn the five main food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, dairy) using the USDA MyPlate guide. Studying nutrition explains how nutrients provide energy, build strong bones, support growth, and protect the body against illness during daily life and development.
When children learn it
Basic hygiene and healthy food choices begin in 1st grade and 2nd grade health units. In 3rd through 5th grade, students analyze food labels, nutrient functions (vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates), and daily exercise requirements aligned with national health education standards.
Common Mistakes
- Classifying all packaged foods as healthy, ignoring hidden sugars and high sodium content on nutritional labels.
- Thinking dairy is the only source of calcium or protein, missing plant-based sources like beans and leafy greens.
- Believing exercise is only for athletes, failing to recognize that daily physical movement is necessary for everyone.
