About The Five Senses
What this skill is
Sensory biology explores how sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) collect environmental stimuli and send signals to the brain to help us observe surroundings, enjoy food, and avoid danger.
When children learn it
Introduced in preschool and kindergarten; connected to scientific observation methods in 1st and 2nd grade (NGSS 1-LS1-1).
Teaching Tips
- Create a mystery feel box: place household objects (a pinecone, a velvet ribbon, an ice cube, a sponge) inside a cardboard tissue box. Have your child reach in blindfolded and describe tactile textures before guessing.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking touch only occurs with fingertips rather than skin across the entire body.
- Confusing flavors (sweet, salty, sour, bitter) with smells.
- Describing emotional feelings ("happy") rather than sensory tactile textures ("rough, smooth").
