About Plants
What this skill is
Botany covers plant structures (roots, stem, leaves, flower, seed) and physiological needs (sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, soil minerals) required to produce glucose through photosynthesis and complete pollination cycles.
When children learn it
Basic plant parts and needs are taught in kindergarten and 1st grade; photosynthesis and pollination cycles are studied in 3rd through 5th grade (NGSS 2-LS2-1, 5-LS1-1).
Teaching Tips
- Sprout a dry pinto bean in a damp paper towel zipped inside a clear plastic sandwich bag taped to a sunny window. Within four days, your child will watch the seed coat split, the root emerge downward, and the green stem reach upward.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking plants "eat" dirt rather than using soil minerals and generating food in leaves through sunlight.
- Confusing the stem (structure and water transport) with the roots (water intake and anchoring).
- Believing seeds do not need oxygen or water to begin germinating.
