What this skill is
Sound is a form of mechanical energy produced by vibrating objects that travels in sound waves through solids, liquids, and gases. Children learn how vibration rate determines pitch (high or low sound) and how vibration amplitude determines volume (loud or soft sound). Studying sound explains how human ears receive vibrations, how musical instruments produce notes, and how sound travels through different mediums during physical science.
When children learn it
Sound creation and loudness (volume) are introduced in 1st grade and 2nd grade through musical instrument exploration. In 3rd grade and 4th grade, students investigate sound wave motion, pitch modification, frequency, decibels, and sound transmission through solids, liquids, and air.
