About Measuring Weather
What this skill is
Weather measurement applies scientific instruments to quantify temperature (thermometer in degrees F/C), rainfall depth (rain gauge in inches/mm), wind direction (weather vane), and wind speed (anemometer) over time.
When children learn it
Introduced in 2nd grade and practiced with multi-day tracking logs in 3rd and 4th grade (NGSS 3-ESS2-1).
Teaching Tips
- Build a homemade rain gauge: cut the top off an empty plastic water bottle, invert it as a funnel, mark inch lines with a permanent marker, and set it on an open outdoor patio to measure morning rainfall.
Common Mistakes
- Misreading thermometer scales that count by 2-degree increments rather than 1-degree steps.
- Confusing wind vane directional arrows (pointing into the incoming wind) with wind travel direction.
- Placing rain gauges under tree branches or roof eaves where raindrops are blocked.
