About Weather and Seasons

What this skill is

Weather describes the day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere in a local area, including temperature, precipitation (rain, snow), wind speed, and cloud cover. Seasons are four annual weather periods (spring, summer, fall, winter) driven by Earth's orbit. Studying weather and seasons teaches children how atmospheric changes affect clothing, outdoor safety, plant growth, temperature shifts, regional climate patterns, and daily human activities in early childhood science.

When children learn it

Daily weather chart tracking begins in PreK and kindergarten morning meetings. In 1st grade and 2nd grade, children record temperature trends, identify seasonal weather patterns, and connect weather conditions to appropriate clothing and safety choices across health and Earth science units and meteorological studies.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing daily weather with long-term climate, assuming one cold rainy day means the whole season is winter.
  • Misinterpreting weather symbols, mistaking a cloud-with-lightning symbol for a simple rain shower on calendar charts.
  • Choosing inappropriate clothing for extreme weather conditions, such as picking sandals for snowy winter weather on matching sheets.
