Alphabetical ordering is the systematic arrangement of words according to the sequential order of the 26 English alphabet letters (A to Z). Students learn to compare initial letters, and when first letters match, compare 2nd or 3rd letters (apple, ant, axe). Mastering alphabetical order is a foundational research skill needed for using dictionaries, glossaries, indexes, library catalogs, and reference systems effectively across all elementary grades.
When children learn it
1st-letter ABC ordering begins in kindergarten and 1st grade using letter strips. In 2nd grade and 3rd grade, students sort word lists by 2nd and 3rd letters and locate words between dictionary guide words aligned with early reference standards, glossaries, research projects, and library research skills.
Common Mistakes
- Comparing only the 1st letter when sorting words, ignoring that words starting with the same letter must be ordered by their 2nd letter.
