About Hyperbole

What this skill is

Hyperbole is deliberate, intentional exaggeration used for dramatic emphasis, humor, or emotional intensity, not intended to be taken literally (such as "I have told you a million times").

When children learn it

Taught in 4th and 5th grade reading and figurative language units (CCSS 5.L.5.a).

Teaching Tips

  • Ask: "Could this literally, physically happen?". Could a backpack actually weigh a million pounds? No! If it is an extreme exaggeration made for emphasis, it is hyperbole.

Common Mistakes

  • Taking hyperbolic exaggerations as literal facts.
  • Confusing hyperbole with standard similes.
  • Overusing hyperbole until factual descriptions lose credibility.
