About Personification
What this skill is
Personification is a literary device that attributes human qualities, emotions, actions, or consciousness to animals, inanimate objects, or natural phenomena (such as "the wind whispered in the trees").
When children learn it
Taught in 4th and 5th grade literature and poetry analysis (CCSS 4.L.5.a, 5.L.5.a).
Teaching Tips
- Look at everyday objects in the room: ask "If the refrigerator could talk, what would it say? What would a grandfather clock say as it ticks?". Giving human voices to objects makes personification exciting.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing personification with simple animal behavior.
- Missing the human verb applied to the non-human object (e.g., the teapot "screamed").
- Confusing personification with metaphor.
